Chapter 10

Amy stared at him. Zeb. Her husband. Or should be. Why couldn’t he see that she loved him, and there’d never be another one for her? Why, his own eyes looked at her with love. Why did he have to be so stubborn?

“Zeb, why not give us a chance?” She closed the distance between them.

He tore his gaze from her. “No. I have my plans.”

“I’d go with you. Follow you anywhere.”

This time he forcibly moved her from his side. “A man doesn’t take a bride unless he can care for her. I’ll be just starting out. No comfort for a woman.”

“I wasn’t comfortable in New York. I’m strong and not afraid of hard work. Even Adam had Eve—a”

He glanced at her with a wry smile. “Look how that worked out. My mind is made up.”

She huffed. “God has plans too. Don’t you be surprised if I show up wherever it is you’re going.”

“Ha, not likely. I will come back and visit my parents. If you’re still here, who knows?”

Amy ran a hand through her thick hair. “Well, not likely I’ll be sitting in a rocking chair waiting for you. No, Zebulon Benton, if you’re smart you’ll take me with you and have the perfect wife God intended for you.”

He stepped away from her. “Like I said, I’m leaving Denver. I hope you find the man of your dreams.” He tipped his hat to her. “I’ve got business to attend to. See you at the cabin.”

She ignored him. Yet, her eyes rested on his back as he strode away. Rubbing her arms, she whispered after him, “You are the man of my dreams.”

After a few moments of watching and hoping he’d come to his senses and run back to her, she turned away.
